Biomass Conversion to Produce Hydrocarbon Liquid Fuel Via Hot-vapor Filtered Fast Pyrolysis and Catalytic Hydrotreating

DOI: 10.3791/54088-v
What you'll learn
  • Operate fast pyrolysis for biomass bio-oil production
  • Apply hot-vapor filtration to remove char and inorganics
  • Perform catalytic hydrotreating of bio-oil to hydrocarbons
  • Compare filtered and unfiltered bio-oil hydrotreating results
Protocol

Biopharma Insights Experimental methods for fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass to produce bio-oils and for the catalytic hydrotreating of bio-oils to produce fuel range hydrocarbons are presented. Hot-vapor filtration during fast pyrolysis to remove fine char particles and inorganic contaminants from bio-oil was also assessed.

Difficulty

Total time
~4-6 hours per biomass batch plus hydrotreating time

Steps
